John Wilkie (director) was born in Scotland where he trained as an actor. He subsequently undertook a trainee director programme at the National Theatre, was a Young Artist Director at Garsington Opera and Opera Holland Park, and trained extensively with Complicité. In May 2019, John worked with Classical Opera on a Gluck double-bill, which featured the operas Bauci e Filemone and Orfeo. Recent directing and revival directing credits include La traviata (New Zealand Festival Opera), La Cenerentola (Den Jyske Opera), Die Fledermaus (Wilton’s Music Hall), The Spider’s Revenge (Opera North), Dido and Aeneas and Suor Angelica (Goldsmiths). As a founding member of Opera Bohemia, a company dedicated to introducing dynamic productions to remote parts of Scotland, John has directed productions of La bohème, Lucia di Lammermoor, Madama Butterfly and Eugene Onegin, all of which have premièred at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival before touring nationally. John also regularly works as an associate and revival director at companies across the UK and beyond. Selected projects include a world première of Mamzer/Bastard and The Importance of Being Earnest (The Royal Opera House), L’italiana in Algeri (Garsington Opera), Carmen (Scottish Opera), Don Giovanni (Opera North), Adriana Lecouvreur, Lakmé and Zazà (Opera Holland Park).
